These old-fashioned homemade lard biscuits are a true taste of Southern comfort. Made with lard instead of butter or shortening, these biscuits bake up tender, fluffy, and wonderfully flavorful with a beautiful golden crust.

Buttermilk Biscuits Made with Lard

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Self-Rising Flour

  • ½ cup Lard

  • ¾ Cups Buttermilk (I prefer whole)

  • 1 tablespoons Bacon Grease or lard for the pan

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F
  2. Add 1 tablespoon of bacon grease or lard to a cast iron pan and place in the oven to melt while the pan is heating

  3. In a bowl, add self-rising flour and grated butter together. If you are unable to grate the butter, you can dice it into small pieces and stir into the flour. It’s ok to have small chunks of butter.
  4. Add part of the buttermilk and stir together. Continue to add more of the buttermilk until you get a moist dough but not overly sticky.
  5. Form into a large round circular dough about 1 and ½ inches thick. Using a round cutter, cut out round biscuits. Should get 6 biscuits

  6. Remove hot cast iron pan from the oven and place bisuit dough into the pan and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown
